Naman Abdul Jader
1916-1991
Mr Naman Abdul Jader was born in 1916 in Nasiriya district of Iraq, of a religious Mandaean family,
where he finished his primary education, and was a top graduate at the Institute of Education for
Primary School Teachers. He was appointed a primary school teacher in the district in 1936. He
then went on to study at the Institute of Education for Secondary School Teachers. He achieved a
Bachelor Degree in Mathematics and graduated with top marks amongst his peers. He went on to
serve in the Iraqi mandatory military national service as a Lieutenant. He was then appointed to the
School of Mechanical Construction where he taught Mathematics. Shortly after he was appointed as
school inspector in the district.

He was awarded a scholarship to the USA in 1948 for a Masters degree from University of Michigan
in Ann Arbor. This was an opportunity that was considerably rare at that time and it was in
recognition of his work, ethics and academic achievements. He graduated with Honours in 1950 and
returned back to Iraq to be appointed a Senior Lecturer at the College of Sciences, University of
Baghdad. Mr Jader occupied various senior positions in the college including College Registrar,
Reader and Associate Dean for Students Welfare in 1958. He became the Acting Dean of the college
in 1959 and then the Head of the Department of Mathematics.

He was the co-founder of the Iraqi Society of Mathematics and Physics along with Professor Abdul
Jabbar Abdullah, a distinguished first Iraqi scientist in the field of Dynamic Meteorology. Mr Jader
also had a very important influence on generations of secondary school students in Iraq being the
Editor in chief of their secondary schools mathematics books (1960-1970).

After years of dedication and educational achievements on the subject of Mathematics as well as for
his academic services in general, he was given the Iraqi Government highest distinction and
esteemed award for his distinguished and outstanding service. He retired on 4/5/1981. His name
was also included among the educators section of 'List of Iraqis' from Wikipedia; a list of people
who were born in Iraq and people who are of Iraqi ancestry, who are significantly notable for their

Mr Jader was most faithful to his work and a model father to his 6 daughters whom he raised with
his wife Mrs Hiat Dakhil, a virtuous educator of children and they both raised their daughters to be
high achievers in science careers including medicine, pharmacy, engineering and also accountancy.
He passed away on 19/9/1991 after a long struggle with illness
